This historical report covers one of CIOMS’ round table conferences aimed to stimulate free and informed exchange of opinion on the social, moral, ethical, administrative and legal implications of new developments in biology and medicine. In focusing on “Medical Experimentation and the Protection of Human Rights”, CIOMS has provided a forum for participants representing many disciplines and drawn from a wide range of countries to discuss how the welfare of subjects taking part in medical research may best be protected.
