The first meeting of the CIOMS Ethical WG on the Revision of CIOMS 2002 International Ethical Guidelines for Biomedical Research Involving Human Subjects will be held at WHO HQ in Geneva, Switzerland on Tuesday 4 and Wednesday 5 September 2012.

During its annual meeting in 2009, the Executive Committee of CIOMS considered the desirability of a revision of the CIOMS guidelines for biomedical research. The last revision of that document dates from 2002 and since then several important developments have taken place, in terms of changes to relevant documents and changes in the field of biomedical research itself and in the field of research ethics. Among the former developments is the revision of the Declaration of Helsinki in 2008.

The Executive Committee considered that these developments might warrant the start of a new revision process of the CIOMS guidelines for biomedical research. On request by the Secretary- General, the present President of CIOMS has taken the lead of such an initiative.

The new WG will consist of experts representing different global regions and aim to be gender and age balanced and to include patient representatives.
