Eugenijus Gefenas

Eugenijus Gefenas is an associate professor and director of the Department of Medical History and Ethics at the Medical Faculty of Vilnius University. He is also a director of the Lithuanian Bioethics Committee. Eugenijus Gefenas graduated from the Medical Faculty of Vilnius University in 1983 and obtained his PhD in medical ethics from the Institute of Philosophy, Sociology and Law in 1993. E. Gefenas teaches bioethics at the Medical Faculty of Vilnius University and together with the colleagues from the Center for Bioethics and Clinical leadership of the Graduate College of Union University (USA) co-directs the Advanced Certificate Program in Research Ethics in Central and Eastern Europe. E. Gefenas is a member of the Council of Europe Committee on Bioethics; he was a chair of this Committee in 2011-2012. His international activities also include the membership in the European Society for Philosophy of Medicine and Health Care and he has been recently appointed to represent Lithuania at the Bureau of the Intergovernmental Bioethics Committee (IGBC) of UNESCO. The areas of his professional interest include ethical issues related to human research, psychiatry and health care in the transition societies.
